With the rapid development of AI, the impact of Generative AI on the humanities is gradually expanding. Can its automatic learning ability fully understand and master the knowledge and paradigms of the humanities? Can it assist or even replace human scholars in engaging in creative research and dialogue? This forum aims to explore the application of GenAI technology in traditional humanities research fields such as history, literature, and archaeology, and to discuss its developmental potential. The forum has invited a cross-disciplinary panel of scholars from history, archaeology, digital humanities, machine learning, and large language models (LLMs). They will share their research experiences and personal explorations, and jointly contemplate how to integrate the emerging GenAI technology with traditional humanities research and provide innovative development prospects for humanities scholars. Key questions for discussion in the forum:
(1) Is it necessary to use GenAI in our work as humanities scholars? What new perspectives and insights does it provide?
(2) How can we best integrate GenAI into our work? Or will it spark a revolution in the way we do our work?
(3) As historians and archaeologists, what role should we give to Generative AI? Should we see it as a research assistant, a “shadow colleague,” or something else? We invite our speakers to share their thoughts on these questions by drawing upon their experiences, successes, and failures.

As a traditional humanities discipline, history must also embrace the arrival of the digital era. With more young scholars engaging in digital historical research, expanding existing historical research methods and fields, and even driving paradigm shifts in historiography, we inevitably ask:
(1) How should today’s historical talent cultivation embrace digital transformation?
(2) What kind of academic toolkits and new academic thinking should be provided to the reserve force of historians to keep the tree of history evergreen?
This forum will invite teachers with experience in teaching digital history courses from different universities who have experience in teaching courses related to digital history to share their experiences and engage in specialised discussions on the above-mentioned topics.

The evolution of digital media constantly updates publishers’ understanding and imagination of knowledge production, dissemination mediums, user needs, and the entire publishing industry chain. The publishing industry, born out of the need for mass communication, has diversified with the emergence of niche broadcasting and social media. Academic publishing inherently has niche characteristics, and its content production, dissemination, and use follow the internal logic of the academic community, suggesting a natural connection between academic publishing, AI, and machine learning. GenAI’s powerful content output based on big data can quickly provide resources for academic production, and its self-learning and optimisation abilities offer many possibilities for knowledge reproduction. The guests of this forum, from the academic publishing industry and experts with deep thoughts on future media, will focus on discussing the impact GenAI has already had in academic publishing, explore its value and problems from multiple perspectives, and further discuss the future of academic publishing. Key topics for discussion in the forum:
(1) Impact of Media Convergence on Publishing: How does media convergence affect the publishing industry? Explore the variety and interconnectedness in the production of converged media content, and examine how readers’ habits and preferences shape content creation, distribution methods, and marketing strategies.
(2) GenAI in Academic Publishing: What are the significant positive and negative aspects of using generative AI in academic publishing? Please give examples.
(3)Evolution of Publishers in Digital Publishing: As publishers transition from supporting teaching and learning to becoming providers of hybrid educational platforms, this change is marked by enhanced collaboration between publishers and universities. What are the current and prospective product and service models in this realm? Please distinguish between transitional and more stable, mature forms in this evolving landscape.

The future of digital humanities scholarship rests on future digital humanities scholars, primarily the young students presently immersed in digital humanities research and exploration. To nurture this talent, Tsinghua University’s journal Digital Humanities has successfully hosted four “Future Scholar” forums. These forums are designed to inspire and support undergraduate and graduate students in their digital humanities research, encouraging them to integrate innovative methods, perspectives, and contemporary questions into their exploration of new avenues in humanities scholarship. This particular forum is a part of the fourth “Future Scholars” series and serves as a special showcase for the exceptional work produced in Tsinghua University’s Rixin College’s “Digital Humanities” course. The students’ projects employ digital methodologies to delve into traditional areas of literary and historical research, such as textual criticism and the tracing of sources. These projects span a variety of subjects, including poetry, social interactions, astronomy, and geography, demonstrating the academic zeal and potential for research innovation among young scholars.
